THIOGUARD® TST Total System Treatment
A Bio-Receptive Mineral, Nutrient, and Alkalinity Source
For the Entire Wastewater Treatment System
by Matthew Madolora
For over 30 years, Premier has led the industry in production and sales of magnesia specialty products. As the leader, Premier remains on the forefront of research and development of magnesia applications. Premier’s Bio-Active manufacturing processes produce a superior, biologically receptive, mineral, nutrient and alkalinity source that makes it the product of choice for a diverse array of applications. Among these applications, Thioguard® has evolved to take wastewater treatment to new levels.
Thioguard® impacts all areas of a wastewater treatment system. The results are dramatic improvements in the way budget dollars are spent and aesthetic value of the treatment system as a whole.

The use of Thioguard addresses a myriad of issues facing municipal wastewater systems today. Among these issues are system-wide H2S gas odors and corrosion, skyrocketing O&M, plant upsets and process inefficiency. Premier uses unique methods for manufacturing its raw magnesia to create a product that has superior biological reactivity as a divalent cation, nutrient and alkalinity source. Available in Thioguard, this technology enables Premier to address the many areas of wastewater listed above.
Municipalities spend millions of dollars annually for wastewater piping and infrastructure on new construction, replacements and rehabilitation. Thioguard has been created to insure the engineered longevity of new concrete piping and infrastructure and to salvage and lengthen remaining life on existing piping and infrastructure. Thioguard accomplishes this life extension by attacking the primary culprit of sewer system degradation and premature failure, i.e., H2S gas corrosion. The result is money saved on the cost of replacing and repairing failed infrastructure by extension of depreciable life.
Thioguard further has the capability to improve the condition of the collection system; reducing H2S gas odors, SSO-causing grease build-up and emergency failure. Thioguard accomplishes this primarily by buffering pH at a prescribed range to optimally reduce grease build-up and H2S gas, both chemically and biologically. But Thioguard also uses ad/absorption mechanisms to further aid in sulfide reduction.
Because of the bioavailability of Mg+2 and OH-1 alkalinity, Thioguard is able to contribute substantially to the operational efficiency of wastewater treatment plants. Improvements to the monovalent/divalent (M/D) cation ratio lead ultimately to better solids removal and handling. The beneficial addition of Thioguard is reflected in improved clarification, BOD removal, DO demand, nitrification, disinfection, digestion, biosolids quality and more.
When investigated in its entirety, many of the problems experienced by wastewater managers can be linked to deficiencies in mineral, nutrients and alkalinity. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of products designed to treat many of these problems on an individual basis. Often, the implementation of one product to address a particular problem requires the implementation of additional products to address undesired results. Correcting all of these problems may be as simple as correcting the deficiencies addressed by Thioguard. Once the proper mineral, nutrient and alkalinity balance is obtained, supplemental additives can often be eliminated or at least minimized.
Premier has committed thousands of man-hours in evaluating the role of magnesia in literally hundreds of applications. Our research has led to the development of dozens of grades of magnesia to best suit the needs of Premier’s many customers. Thioguard, one of Premier’s most recent and technologically extensive products, is demonstration of Premier’s undying commitment to excellence and determination in remaining on the forefront of our industry’s R&D.
