Ask the Technical Director
You ask and we answer! MgWater Technical Director Matt Madolora offers solutions to common water treatment problems.
QUESTION: What is the best biological or chemical treatment for fats, oil and grease (F.O.G.) in wastewater treatment?
ANSWER: F.O.G. is a major challenge in wastewater treatment because it can clog pipes, interfere with biological processes, and create environmental issues if not properly managed. Treatment strategies usually combine pretreatment, separation, and biological processes. The most effective strategy is to keep F.O.G out of the wastewater stream at the source. Once in the plant, a combination of DAF with biological treatment is standard for removing what remains.
The addition of magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) boosts pH levels throughout a wastewater treatment system, preventing the conditions that encourage the accumulation of grease. THIOGUARD®, a 60% magnesium hydroxide slurry from Premier Magnesia, improves the immediate environment, allowing good bacteria to perform their function. By the time the wastewater reaches its reclamation facility, the majority of the F.O.G. has been either consumed or reduced to simpler organics.
