Ask the Technical Director

You ask, and we answer! MgWater Technical Director Matt Madolora offers solutions to common water treatment problems.

QUESTION: Biosolids disposal costs are rising. What are the most effective ways to stay on budget?

ANSWER:MgBalance™ is a comprehensive treatment program capable of delivering large scale cost savings in the complex field of nutrient recovery and reuse. Our 60% magnesium hydroxide slurry is the most concentrated form of consistent and reliably superior aqueous alkalinity commercially available. When modeled and applied appropriately, MgBalance treatment techniques help reduce struvite scaling and promote struvite recovery, while creating biosolids that are dewatered better for transportation purposes and potentially have a higher or more desirable reuse value.

Most facilities operate around 20% cake solids, meaning 80% of what’s hauled is water. MgBalance  enhances the dewatering process so operators can push cake solids closer to 25%. This shift materially changes hauling economics. The MgWater team can create an approach that optimizes cost and performance for each facility’s unique needs.

For example, at 20% solids, 10 trucks might be required to haul 50 dry tons (5 dry tons per truck with a hauling capacity of 25 wet tons). If a wastewater treatment facility can increase dryness to 25%, then each truck would carry 6.25 dry tons, reducing the total trucks required to just 8 trucks. That’s a 20% reduction in hauling volume, with immediate savings in contractor fees, fuel surcharges, and labor.

Beyond hauling, MgBalance can also reduce polymer demand by improving solids capture efficiency, addressing another rising cost center. With both chemical and fuel prices fluctuating, it gives facilities a practical way to re-optimize operations, stabilize budgets, and avoid paying twice for inefficiency, once in treatment and again in transport.
