Ask the Technical Director
You ask, and we answer! MgWater Technical Director Matt Madolora offers solutions to common water treatment problems.
QUESTION: How can magnesium hydroxide be used to treat source water contaminants?
ANSWER: Source water may contain various organic and inorganic contaminants, including natural organic matter, heavy metals, pesticides, and industrial chemicals. Treating and removing these substances require specialized processes.Nutri-Mg++®is a process created by Premier Magnesia’s MgWater Group to enhance the treatment of source water with magnesium hydroxide and fortify drinking water with magnesium, an essential nutrient.
Magnesium hydroxide raises the pH of source water to support contaminant removal. This higher pH causes dissolved heavy metals like lead and copper to form insoluble particles that can be easily removed through settling or filtration. Magnesium hydroxide also enhances coagulation, helping remove natural organic matter, which affects color, odor and disinfection byproducts. Additionally, it promotes floc formation, improving removal of pesticides and industrial contaminants. Compared to traditional chemicals, magnesium hydroxide provides safer handling, better pH control, and more consistent treatment performance.
By reducing the need for caustic chemicals, iron, alum, and polymers, and even helping to minimize inorganic sludge, Nutri-Mg++ helps simplify maintenance and safeguard water distribution systems.
