Magnesium oxide holds a well-known role in the production of
rubber and plastics. Used in rubber compounding, magnesium oxide acts as
a heat stabilizer, preventing the premature crosslinking of polymers during the
heating process. It also acts as an acid acceptor during vulcanization,
including the neutralization of hydrochloric acid (HCl). In addition, MgO
is used in plastic thickening, adhesives, and anticaking mixtures.
